About the African Union
The African Union (AU) is a continental body composed of 55 African Member States. Established to promote unity, economic integration, peace, and sustainable development across Africa, the AU plays a central role in shaping policies that impact millions of people across the continent. The AU headquarters is located in Addis Ababa, where most internship placements will take place.
Purpose of the African Union Internship Program
The AU Internship Program is designed to:
- Provide practical professional experience within a multicultural environment
- Strengthen young Africans’ understanding of continental governance and development
- Develop technical, research, and policy skills
- Create a pipeline of future African leaders
Interns work directly with AU departments, gaining exposure to real policy processes, research assignments, administrative functions, and development initiatives.
Internship Location and Duration
Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Duration: Three months (renewable once for an additional three months)

Internships are primarily based at the AU headquarters, though some departments may offer flexible or hybrid arrangements depending on operational needs.

Selected interns may be assigned to various departments within the African Union Commission, including:

- Economic Development, Trade and Industry
- Agriculture and Rural Development
- Education, Science, Technology and Innovation

- Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development
- Human Resources Management
- Information and Communication
- Gender, Women and Youth Directorate
- Office of the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson
These placements allow interns to contribute meaningfully while building professional competence in governance, diplomacy, research, administration, and project management.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the African Union Internship Program 2026, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a national of an African Union Member State
- Be a full-time student in the final year of a Bachelor’s or postgraduate program, or a recent graduate (within the last two years)
- Be no older than 32 years at the time of application
- Be fluent in at least one AU working language (Arabic, English, French, or Portuguese)
- Demonstrate high ethical standards and integrity
- Have no serious criminal record
Importantly, prior professional work experience is not required, making this program accessible to fresh graduates.
Required Skills and Competencies
Applicants should demonstrate:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ability to work in multicultural and team-based environments
- Professionalism and willingness to learn
- Good analytical and organizational skills
Knowledge of additional AU languages such as Kiswahili or Spanish may be considered an advantage
